How to Draw a Body of Water With Pencil
In this tutorial, I will demonstrate how to draw water. There are many dissimilar states of water and hither I will show how to draw calm h2o and water with turbulence. A large impact on believable drawing of h2o is correct depiction of reflection in the h2o based on its country. Always keep the following key indicate in listen.
Sharpness of the edges of reflection in h2o indicate to our mind the land of water. A still water will take well defined edges and as the turbulence in water increases, the edges of reflection become distorted and hazy.
Pen and Ink is used as the drawing medium in instructions below but same technique and concepts tin can be used with other mediums as well.
Drawing Water: Bones Water Stroke:
Following shows a unproblematic horizontal wavy line that indicates a water ripple.
This water stroke when combined with appropriate reflection tin can be used to depict water as shown beneath.
Drawing At-home Water:
Vertical lines are very effective at drawing even so reflection in calm h2o as shown below. The shape and size of reflection should ever match the object for a conceivable depiction. Reflection doesn't accept to be verbal merely the overall shape should match. As mentioned above, the edges of reflection should be clean/well defined to indicate calm water.

Drawing Water: Edges
Usually border of h2o, similar a river banking concern, needs to be drawn when the drawing has h2o in foreground. In this case, utilise vertical lines to define the edge of water as shown below. To increase depth of edge, increase length of vertical lines.
This approach can be used to draw any edge. By adding water stroke and reflection, presence of water is conveyed equally shown below.
Key Considerations for Drawing Reflection:
Following are 3 key points to remember regarding drawing reflection in h2o:
- Only Function of Object is reflected in water as information technology moves abroad from water'south edge.
Compared to higher up, the post is set back in the drawing beneath and hence only part of it is reflected making its reflection smaller in comparison to it's size.
2. The angle of object should be accordingly shown in reflection.
The size of reflection for objects at bending can get quite complicated. It is non necessary to get the verbal bending right, instead focus on getting the overall direction right.
3. Visibility of reflection decreases with top of object and clarity of water.
Reflection is well-nigh visible/darkest at the base. Reflection of branches and end twigs of the post-obit immature tree is barely discernible. Describe reflection in water using small dots or ticks to convey that effect.
Drawing Water: Calculation Turbulence
Motion of h2o leads to distortion of edges of reflection in water. Turbulence in water is all-time indicated by using wavy horizontal lines to indicate distortion in the reflection due to turbulence. Add more 'moving ridge' to the h2o stroke to bespeak movement in h2o besides as discussed before.

Increasing Reflection Distortion to Point More than Turbulence:
Increasing the distortion in reflection and making it darker gives impression of more turbulent water as shown below. Use appropriate level of distortion to indicate the level of turbulence you lot want.
Indicating Reflection Using H2o Stroke:
In the techniques to a higher place, vertical lines were used for calm reflection and distorted reflection using horizontal lines were used to draw turbulent water with h2o stroke added as well. Another technique is to utilise water stroke itself to signal reflection past using more stroke to darken the area indicating reflection as shown below. Since stroke management is horizontal, this technique can be used for drawing turbulent reflection.

The same technique tin be used to draw h2o without explicit embankment as shown below. In this example, darken the edge of water to testify reflection and make sure to go along the border of water very irregular.
Following is another instance of cartoon h2o flowing across without an embankment.
Drawing Water Flowing towards the Viewer:
Higher up, we learned how to draw water flowing across in a landscape. Another option is to describe water flowing towards the viewer and in this instance following 'ripple' stroke is used.
Post-obit drawing shows utilise of this stroke to depict water flowing out from the mail service. Horizontal lines are used to indicate reflection.
Following is another case where additional ripple stroke is used to point reflection. This technique works well for a wide object like the stones below merely for a thin tall object like the postal service above, reflection using horizontal lines works better. Try both the techniques.
The ripples forcefulness usually becomes less with distance though their size becomes bigger. Add some dark's to increase the force of ripples near the object and reduce it with altitude. This gives a good sense of menses of water equally shown below.
Drawing Falling Water:
Falling h2o, like in a waterfall, tin can be simply indicated by lines to point fall of water as shown below. To depict a waterfall at a altitude, this is frequently sufficient. Stroke mentioned above should be used to show water continuing to the viewer as shown below.
Same technique tin can be used to depict cascading waterfall as shown below. Use ripple stroke to draw water flowing down a slope and athwart vertical lines to draw h2o falling down.
Drawing a Stream/River:
A stream/river is indicated by using flowing lines to bespeak flow of water in the desired direction. Click on the following link to learn how to draw a river footstep by step.

Drawing a Stream Through Woods:
A stream flowing through woods is a very pleasing composition. Information technology uses combination of techniques we saw earlier. Click on the post-obit drawing to learn how to draw a stream through the woods.
A very pleasing composition is a waterfall that continues equally a stream. Techniques for drawing falling water and stream/river tin exist combined to create such a drawing from imagination anytime. Following is an instance. Learn to describe this waterfall standing every bit a stream step past pace.

Cartoon a Moving ridge of Water:
A wave of water, like in a shoreline, is also a charming improver to any landscape with water. Forepart of wave of water is very irregular and this should be properly indicated to bring out the feel of wave of water. Click on the post-obit drawing to learn how to draw a shoreline.

Curved broken lines can be used to signal a wave of water crashing on shore and reflecting as shown in following cartoon. Click here for step by pace tutorial to draw such crashing moving ridge of water.
